1. Wiardi Beckman Marker

Herman Bernard Wiardi Beckman, bijgenaamd Stuuf, was een veelbelovend, sociaaldemocratische politicus en hoofdredacteur van dagblad Het Vrije Volk. Hij was betrokken bij verzetskrant Het Parool en dacht na over Nederland na de bevrijding. Als socialist wilde hij vooral een einde maken aan de enorme werkeloosheid en armoede. Ook pleitte hij voor een zo goed mogelijke militaire verdediging. 'Liever den ondergang dan slaaf' was zijn motto tijdens een interventie in de Eerste Kamer in 1939. Een motto dat hij vanaf 10 mei 1940 als reserve- officier en vervolgens als verzetsman overtuigd heeft nageleefd. Tijdens een tocht naar Engeland, na een oproep van Koningin Wilhelmina om deel te nemen aan het oorlogskabinet, werd Wiardi Beckman met enkele anderen door de Sicherheitsdienst gearresteerd. Hij overleed kort voor de bevrijding in concentratiekamp Dachau. Zijn geest bleef, aldus zijn medegevangenen in de verschillende kampen, tot het laatste moment ongebroken. Naar Wiardi Beckman is het wetenschappelijk bureau voor de sociaal-democratie genoemd.
Herman Bernard Wiardi Beckman, nicknamed "Stuuf", was a promising Social-Democratic politician and editor-in-chief of the daily newspaper Het Vrije Volk ("The Free People"). He was involved with the resistance newspaper Het Parool and was concerned about the Netherlands after liberation. As a socialist, he especially wanted to put an end to the enormous unemployment and poverty. He also argued for the best possible military defence. 'Better to despair than be a slave' was his motto during an intervention in the Senate in 1939, a motto that he faithfully followed from 10 May 1940 as a reserve officer and then as a resistance member. During a trip to England, after an appeal from Queen Wilhelmina to join the war cabinet, Wiardi Beckman was arrested by the Sicherheitsdienst along with several others. He died shortly before the liberation in Dachau concentration camp. His spirit, according to his fellow prisoners in the various camps, remained unbroken until the last moment. The scientific bureau for social democracy is named after Wiardi Beckman.
