Methodists in area served by circuit rider W.B. Kavanaugh from 1838-1840. First church built on this site in 1840 was brick with two frontdoors and the altar and pulpit between the doors at the front of the church. Pews were elevated. 32 members in 1842. Present structure built in 1876 at a cost of $7500. 210 members from 1877-80. Known as Methodist Episcopal Church South at time of construction,
