Over-The-Rhine in Cincinnati in Hamilton County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
The Germania Building
The historic Germania Building was built in 1877 by Heinrich Ratterman, founder of the German Mutual Insurance Co. Johann Bast designed the building in the Italian Renaissance and Eastlake styles.
A carving of a charioteer driving four horses decorates the arch above the original center door of the building on the 12th Street side.
The 25-ft. statue of "Germania” on the Walnut Street side was carved by sculptor Leopold Fettweiss as a symbol of the area's German spirit, culture and art.
This plaque is dedicated to the memory of Betty Jo Orr (Owner 1982-1995), whose vision and determination helped revitalize both the Germania Building and the surrounding Over-the-Rhine community.
