Marché Saint-Germain / Saint-Germain Market
— Histoire de Paris —
The Saint-Germain market occupies part of the site of the famous Fair, located from the 12th century on the grounds of the abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. In 1511, Abbé Guillaume Briçonnet had a double attic hall built large enough to accommodate 300 merchants, which disappeared in a fire in 1762. Cultural activities accompanied the fair, its theater was very prosperous and the Opéra-Comique was born there. To replace the fixed market, installed by the monks in 1726, between 1813 and 1817 Blondel built a market whose semicircular arcades, also covered with a double roof, surrounded a square courtyard. Redesigned, its space has been increased by the City to include cultural facilities.
Erected by Ville de Paris.
