Jacob Melkman (roepnaam Jaap) was reclameadviseur en vertegenwoordiger in elektrische apparaten. Hij zette in Amsterdam een stencil- en verspreidings- organisatie op voor de illegale Nieuwsbrief van Pieter 't Hoen, voorloper van Het Parool.

Nadat enkele leden van deze organisatie half september 1941 waren gearresteerd, werd Melkmans naam bekend bij de Amsterdamse Sicherheitspolizei. Na een inval in zijn huis dook hij onder. Later werd hij alsnog gearresteerd.

Na gevangenschap in Amsterdam, Scheveningen, Amersfoort en Vught werd hij eind 1942 ter dood veroordeeld. Melkman werd uiteindelijk met negentien verzetsmensen, onder wie ook leden van de Paroolgroep, gefusilleerd.

in mid-September 1941, Melkman's name became known to the Amsterdam Sicherheitspolizei (the German Security Police). He went into hiding after a raid on his house. He was subsequently arrested.

After imprisonment in Amsterdam, Scheveningen, Amersfoort and Vught, he was sentenced to death at the end of 1942. Melkman was eventually executed with nineteen members of the resistance, including members of the Parool group.
