Communist Johan Hinrik Janzen was stukadoor van beroep. Bij het uitbreken van de oorlog woonde hij aan de Marnixstraat 330 in Amsterdam. Hij was vanaf het begin betrokken bij de ondergrondse Communistische Partij van Nederland (CPN) en bij de verzetskrant De Waarheid. Hij bracht als instructeur voor Rotterdam, Den Haag en Leiden berichten over tussen de landelijke en lokale illegale partijleiding. Bij dit verzetswerk gebruikte hij verschillende schuilnamen, waaronder Leo, Toon, Pietersen en Jan van Gellekom. Op 3 februari 1943 werd hij gearresteerd en verhoord. Bij zijn verhoor gaf hij informatie aan de Duitsers vrij, maar dat betrof personen die al gearresteerd waren, een deel van hen al omgekomen. Janzen werd tijdens een proces ter dood veroordeeld en op de Waalsdorpervlakte samen met andere communisten gefusilleerd.
Communist Johan Hinrik Janzen was a plasterer by profession. At the outbreak of the war he lived at 330 Marnixstraat in Amsterdam. From the beginning he was involved in the underground Communist Party of the Netherlands (CPN) and in the resistance newspaper De Waarheid ("The Truth"). As an instructor for Rotterdam, The Hague and Leiden, he conveyed messages between the national and local illegal party leadership. In this resistance work he used various pseudonyms, including Leo, Toon, Pietersen and Jan van Gellekom. On February 3, 1943, he was arrested and interrogated. During his interrogation, he released information to the Germans, but that concerned people who had already been arrested, some of them already killed. During a trial, Janzen was sentenced to death and executed together with other communists on the Waalsdorpervlakte.
