1. John Donelson Marker
Inscription. John Donelson led a group of 300 men, women, and children, including slaves to the new settlement here, traveling a thousand miles along the Holston, Tennessee, Ohio, and Cumberland Rivers. Donelson’s boat “Adventure” guided their flotilla of about 40 flatboats and canoes through a four-month journey, enduring raging rivers, Indian attacks, disease, hunger and bitter cold. The last 200 miles of the journey were upstream, requiring the settlers to pole their boats against the current to join the Robertson party here in April 1780.
