Inscription. Standard Shaft Mine & Coke Works
The H.C. Frick Coke Company's Standard Shaft-Mine & Coke Works (Pictured above) was in operation from about 1883. until 1931 The original mine: called Standard Shaft No. 2, employed 936 men producing 300,000 to 400.000 tons of coke per year, one of the largest operations in the country at the time. Henry Clay Frick, owner thought so highly of this operation that. he displayed a large scale model of the plant at the 1893 World's Fair in Chicago. In 1901. Standard Shaft No. 3 mine was established another half mile north of the No. 2 mine. These two operations were combined and renamed Standard-Shaft in 1920.
