1. Down The Ohio Marker

Inscription. Lewis "Passed the mouth of Big Beaver Creek [now Beaver River] and came to anchor off McIntosh, being 2 and a half miles” where he "discharged one of my hands.” After passing the riffle below McIntosh, they were stuck about three miles further downstream on another riffle, "the worst I think we have yet passed.” They had to unload and drag the boats over with horses. "Stayed all night, having made only six miles."

Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery gathered men and supplies as they journeyed down the Ohio River. Lewis began keeping his journal in Pittsburgh and Clark joined him at the Falls of the Ohio as the first of the great expeditions began.
