Maarten van Gilse
Mόnchen, 12 juni 1916 - Overveen, 1 oktober 1943
Journalist/writer Maarten van Gilse left Germany when Hitler came to power. During the Spanish Civil War he reported from Spain, was leader of the Dutch Youth Theater and, together with his father Jan, and sculptor Gerrit van der Veen, he formed the editorial board of the illegal magazine De Vrije Kunstnaar ("The Free Artist").
Van Gilse was a master in counterfeiting identity- and ration cards. He was involved in the attack on the Population Register and had close contacts with the Amsterdam resistance group CS-6. In the summer of 1943, the Sicherheitspolizei raided his hiding place on the Prinsengracht in Amsterdam. Van Gilse fled, but was shot in the foot. That autumn, he was shot along with eighteen members of the rolled-up resistance group.
