Inscription.
A historical treasure. The Charlotte Hall School is a one-room schoolhouse built in 1820 on land purchased from the Edwards family for $10 per acre. Originally located on Thompson Corner Road in Charlotte Hall, Maryland, the school was attended by children in grades one through seven who lived within walking distance.

The schoolhouse closed in 1964 after fire damaged the structure. Maryland Senator Henry Fowler, Sr., a former student, purchased the building from the St. Mary's County Board of Education for $5. In 1965, he moved the school to his property, Horse Range Farm, where it was restored to be used as a museum.

Moving forward. In 1991, the heirs of Senator Fowler presented the schoolhouse to the St. Mary's County Museum Division. On April 17th of the same year, the structure was moved 28 miles in six hours from the Senator's farm to its current spot on the grounds of the St. Clement's Island Museum.

Erected by Commissioners of St. Mary's County; St. Mary's County Museum Division; Friends of the St. Clement's Island and Piney Point Museum; Children of the American Colonists; Destination Southern Maryland; Southern Maryland Heritage Area, Maryland Heritage Area Authority.
