A Native of Lake City, Minnesota, Elmer "E.B." Freeman opened a small haberdashery shop near East 25th Street and 26th Avenue around 1914. Three years later, he relocated his business to the first floor of the new Coliseum Building at 27th Avenue and Lake Street. By the early 1920s, the store had a strong customer base in the fast-growing working-class neighborhood. E.B.'s wife, Harriet, started a women's department, and Freeman's gradually evolved into a full-scale department store. Freeman's survived the Depression by providing quality products at good prices to area residents, many of whom were still employed in factory jobs at Minneapolis-Moline and the Ford Plant in St. Paul. E.B. was a great local booster, sponsoring the annual Aquatennial parade and Minnehaha and Lake Businessmen's Association. Freeman's closed in 1975.,
