Yorkville in Manhattan in New York County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Henderson Place Historic District
New York Landmarks Preservation Foundation
This picturesque residential enclave was developed by fur importer and real estate investor John Cleves Henderson in 1880-1882. The Upper East Side site was chosen for its proximity to the new Second Avenue elevated railway and East River Park, now known as Carl Schurz Park, which opened in 1876.
The 30 three-story red brick residences, 21 of which survive, were intended for rental to “people of moderate means.” Designed as an ensemble in the fashionable Queen Anne style by the architectural firm Lamb & Rich, the houses were inspired by British architect Norman Shaw’s work in suburban London. Richly-textured elevations incorporate arched entrance ways, terra cotta ornamentation, and a strikingly varied roof silhouette of gables, dormers, mansards and towers.
