Eighteenth-century York was a time of creativity and innovation. Shown here, backed by the City of York and the Codorus Creek, are some enduring symbols of that century.

From the left: row houses on North Beaver Street; Forry House; the City Market House; the former York Collegiate Institute, forerunner to York College; inventor Phineas Davis and "The York," the first coal-burning locomotive engine; and the National House, formerly the White Hall Hotel and now apartments.
