Mount Vernon in Knox County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Henry B. Curtis
The Mount Vernon Historic Walking Tour
Called the one person who had the greatest influence on shaping Mount Vernon, Henry Curtis moved here at age 17, to study law with his older brother. He had only 25 cents in his pocket.
Among the more active citizens in 19th Century Mount Vernon, Mr. Curtis aided in untangling the legal affairs of one bank and helped organize another. He also helped bring a railroad to Mount Vernon, helped Kenyon College acquire land for its location just east of Mount Vernon, in Gambier, OH, and built houses, a hotel, and a grand mansion.
He was a leader in many areas for our community, and it was said that he "accorded to all alike the same kind, cordial reception and considerate attention".
