Inscription. Established in 1929 by Beman and Bertie Dawes, The Dawes Arboretum was founded to encourage the planting of forest and ornamental trees, to give pleasure to the public and education to the youth. Newark, Ohio was chosen because of its central location, soils and climate. Over the years collections have expanded and notable people have participated in tree plantings.
