Componist/dirigent Jan van Gilse ontving in 1902 voor zijn eerste symfonie een prestigieuze prijs. Later zette hij zich ook in voor de belangen en rechten van muzikanten en componisten. In de oorlog ging hij net als zijn zoons Janrik en Mik in het verzet. Hij verafschuwde het invoeren van de Kultuurkamer en het verbod voor Joodse mensen om concerten te bezoeken. Door zijn anti-nationaalsocialistische houding moest hij samen met zijn vrouw onderduiken. Intussen werden hun beide zoons geλxecuteerd. Jan stierf in 1944 na een ziekbed, maar ook door een gebroken hart. Om zijn nabestaanden te beschermen werd hij onder zijn schuilnaam Johan Willem Dudok van Heel begraven. Bevriend beeldend kunstenaar Mari Andriessen maakte zijn grafmonument: een gebroken man aan wie het zwaard ontvalt, maar die de lier nog omhooghoudt. In 1965 werd Van Gilse's vrouw Ada bij haar man begraven.
Composer/conductor Jan van Gilse received a prestigious prize in 1902 for his first symphony. Later he also worked for the interests and rights of musicians and composers. Like his sons Janrik and Mik, he joined the resistance during the war. He abhorred the introduction of the Kultuurkamer and the ban on Jewish people from attending concerts. Due to his anti-National Socialist attitude, he and his wife had to go into hiding. In the meantime, both their sons were executed. Jan died in 1944 after a period of illness, but also from a broken heart. To protect his relatives, he was buried under his pseudonym Johan Willem Dudok van Heel. His friend, visual artist Mari Andriessen, made his grave monument: a broken man who loses a sword, but who still holds up a lyre. In 1965 Van Gilse's wife Ada was buried with her husband.

Among his works are five symphonies and the Dutch-language opera Thijl....Van Gilse's early style is indebted to German late romanticism. After about 1920, however, it becomes more modernist.
