Inscription. Visitors to Economy stayed at the hotel in the center of town on the southwest comer of 14th and Merchant Streets. Owned and operated by the communal Harmony Society, hired workers later staffed the establishment in the 1890s. Eventually the hotel was sold and torn down around 1905.
The Marquis de Lafayette, William Henry Harrison on the way to his presidential inauguration, President Zachary Taylor, and Rudyard Kipling sojourned at the hotel. One visitor remarked that he was told to arrive promptly at 4:30 for supper, so as not to keep others waiting. One day he found out why. The "tramps” or "unfortunates,” as they were called, were fed after the other guests and staff. The Harmony Society fed and sheltered 15 to 25 of them each day.
