Koen Limperg
Amsterdam, 19 juli 1908 - Overveen, 1 juli 1943
The Amsterdam architect Koen Limperg tried to make people's work and life more pleasant. Beauty and social awareness were his motivations. He exposed abuses in social housing and had an affinity with the Nieuwe Bouwen, which prioritized functionality and the absence of unnecessary decorations. When the occupying forces obliged creative professional groups to join the Kultuurkamer in 1942, Limperg called for resistance. Together with others, he organized financial support for artists who refused membership or who had gone into hiding. He also forged identity cards and collaborated on the illegal magazine De Vrije Sterren. In preparation for the attack on the Amsterdam Population Register, in which many personal cards were destroyed, he drew the necessary maps. Because of his involvement in this, he was arrested a few months later. An SS/Polizei tribunal sentenced him and the eleven others involved to death.
