Regarding Downs House. Excerpt from the National Register nomination:
… It is believed to be the oldest home in Charlestown. Thomas Downs purchased lots 89 and 90 in 1809, just one year after Charlestown was platted. It is thought that he began work on his brick home immediately. The home remained in the Downs family until 1832 when it was sold by his heirs.
The little that is known about Downs comes from Baird's History of Clark County. In this work, Thomas Downs is mentioned as an original member of the Court of General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, created by Territorial Governor William Henry Harrison. The first Court session was held on April 7, 1801, in Springville. …
