Grosse Pointe Shores in Macomb County, Michigan — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Main Residence
The Main Residence sits on the eastern edge of the Gaukler Pointe taking advantage of the views of Lake St. Clair and the surrounding landscape created by Jens Jensen. Architecturally, the Cotswold District in England influenced architect Albert Kahn's Tudor Revival style design of the house. Structurally, however, he constructed it using up-to-date technology: reinforced concrete framing faced with four-inch-thick Briar Hill sandstone.
The Fords moved into the home in September 1928. Eleanor continued living here until 1976, long after Edsel's death and her children moved out. The estate opened to the public in 1978 fulfilling Eleanor's wish that her home be for the public benefit.
Erected by Ford House.
