El fundador de esta ciudad fue Martin Reolin de Varejón en 1613. Su nombre se debe a Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas, Conde-Duque de Lerma, quien intervino ante Felipe III para su erección en el sitio que se llamó Cacamilhuacan.

English translation:
The founder of this city was Martin Reolin de Varejón in 1613. Its name is due to Francisco de Sandoval y Rojas, Count-Duke of Lerma, who intervened before Philip III for its foundation in the place that was called Cacamilhuacan.
