Jan van Hanxleden Houwert
Medemblik, 8 april 1906 - Limmen, 7 januari 1945
Jan van Hanxleden Houwert was a spice merchant and came from the colonies of that time. On May 12, 1940, he distinguished himself as a conscript sergeant at the Battle of the Grebbeberg. As a member of the resistance, he later helped provide forged identity cards, distribution cards, money and addresses for those in hiding. He was involved in the arms transports of the Interior Forces and collected data on the German defenses for the headquarters of the illegal Order Service.
He was arrested together with his cousin Chris Houwert. During transport to the Museumplein, he pretended to be a member of the Feldgendarmerie, the German military police. In the confusion this caused, his cousin escaped. Van Hanxleden Houwert was shot in early 1945 and buried in a mass grave near Overveen. After the war he was posthumously awarded the Resistance Cross 1940-1945.
