The Belair Stable was constructed in 1907 by James T. and William Woodward. It is styled as an English country estate stable. No building plans or early photographs of the entire building survive. One of seven stables at Belair, it was intended to be a showplace. In 1923, after rebuilding the shedrows in brick, William Woodward invited James Brady, a local resident, to assume the role of live-in Stablemaster. Brady, his wife, Gertrude, and their children, Thelma and James, lived in the apartment on the south side of the arch.
[Captions:]
After Belair's purchase by Levitt & Sons Developers, the Stable was used as a machine shop and landscape supply depot. It eventually stood derelict.
In the late 1960s, a group of dedicated and historically minded volunteers began the Stable's first restoration process. The images here give an idea of the enormous task that faced them.
In 2000, the City of Bowie completed a comprehensive restoration of the building and its systems, assuring longevity for one of American Thoroughbred horseracing's most historic places.
