1. 215 N Duluth Avenue Marker
Inscription. On April 23, 1879, The Dakota Pantagraph announced: "R. F. Pettigrew will build him a fine residence in Bennett's addition this summer."

Richard Franklin Pettigrew (July 23, 1848-October 5, 1926) was a lawyer, surveyor, and land developer. He represented the Dakota Territory in the U.S. House of Representatives. After the Dakotas were admitted as States, Pettigrew served as the first full-term senator from the new state of South Dakota.

Pettigrew and his wife Elizabeth (Bessie), lived in this house from 1879-1911. They raised their two sons, Franklin and Arthur, while living here. The Pettigrews owned almost the entire block until 1901. In 1911, they moved to 131 N Duluth Avenue where they lived until their passing.

From July 1912 until 1955, Dr Romeo Roderick (R.R.) Stevenson and his wife Emile owned the home. Dr Stevenson was the first ear, nose, and throat doctor in Sioux Falls. He practiced for 50 years.

From April 1956 until 1978, the home was owned by Lawrence J. and Mildred R. Kean. Lawrence was a Sioux Falls lawyer for 43 years. From September 1978 until October 2021, the home was owned by their son, Judge Gene Paul Kean and his wife Jean. Judge Kean served as a second circuit court judge from 1981 to 2006.

feature is the cypress paneling on the east wall of the library. The wood is also used on the front door, resembling an Italian monastery chapel door.
