Jan Bottema
Oldeboorn, 21 Juli 1908 - Wormerveer, 17 december 1944
Jan Bottema served in the Royal Navy in 1940. He refused to help the Germans in setting up the Construction Service for repairing war damage. He went to work at the Ministry of Water Control and joined the illegal group the Ordedienst. Bottema became involved in espionage activities, such as relaying the mapping data of airports. He also worked for illegal organizations such as the Zeemanspot (a support group for sailors) and the National Support Fund. He provided assistance to English pilots and was district commander of the Interior Forces in Amsterdam-North. At a roadside check, he was recognized and arrested. In retaliation for the sinking of a barge, he was executed along with four others.
