1. The Defence of Gananoque Marker
Inscription.
At this place on September 21, 1812, the 2nd Regiment of the Leeds Rifle Company, a local militia commanded by Colonel Joel Stone, defended this village during an American raid by Captain Benjamin Forsyth and the 1st Rifle Company from Ogdensburg, N.Y. The opening shots fired during this raid were the first heard along the St. Lawrence River frontier. This engagement brought the War of 18 12 to our doorstep.,

C'est à cet endroit, le 21 septembre 1812, que le 2e régiment de la Compagnie des carabiniers de Leeds, une milice locale sous la commande du colonel Joel Stone, défendait le village contre un raid américain dirigé par lé capitaine Benjamin Forsyth de la 1re Compagnie des carabiniers d'Ogdensburg (N.Y.). Les coups de feu initiaux tirés lors de cet affrontement ont été le premiers entendus le long de la frontière du fleuve Saint-Laurent. Par ce fait d'armes, la guerre 1812 était à nos portes.
