Together with Johannes Post, Van Dijk organized a raid on the House of Detention on the Weteringschans in order to free a large number of resistance fighters. The men were unaware that the raid had failed for treason. While waiting for their accomplice's car, they were surprised by the Sicherheitspolizei. Van Dijk was injured, but managed to escape. Hiding in a garden, he was betrayed by local residents. A day later, he and fourteen other resistance members, who were involved in the raid on the prison and the population register, were shot in the dunes near Overveen. He left behind a wife and three sons.
