Inscription.
Cliff Pennock was born near Elgin in 1880. After completing his schooling, he became a barber and operated a shop on Kingston Street. Cliff was also a merchant, as the front of his shop was an ice cream parlour. He also built and sold beautiful inlaid cribbage tables and small pieces of furniture.

But Cliff's passion was photography! He was skilled in the use of glass plate cameras and had a dark room for processing. In 1904 William Laishley owned the Idylwylde Hotel at Chaffeys Lock. He has his good friend Cliff take pictures of guests with their fish catch. Later the Youngstown Ohio fishing club bought the resort and it became the Opinicon Hotel. They kept Cliff on as a barber and photographer. He also continued to run his shop in Elgin. In 1912 he married Ella Driscoll.

Cliff was a member of the Elgin Theatrical Group. In the early 1900's he took photos of the theatre's players. In 1945 Cliff died of a heart attack at the Kingston Hospital. He was buried in the Halladay Cemetery in Elgin. Cliff's photos remain a wonderful record of Elgin & South Crosby from c1900 to c1920.
