This three-storey dressed ashlar building, nine bays across, was erected in 1850 by merchant John Doran with three shops and apartments. Doran, an auctioneer, dealer in dry goods, hardware, groceries, and produce, as well as an agent for the Provincial Insurance Co., was responsible for much of the development overlooking the Tay Basin. In 1919 the block was remodelled and called Riverside Apartments. In 1987, it was gutted and rebuilt inside, with the landmark Perth restaurant Maximillian’s downstairs and apartments upstairs. Note the cut-stone quoins, sills, and lintels; rougher stonework is found on the sides and back. (from Lanark County Tourism website)
