Regarding St. George Hotel. Built in 1830 as a private residence on one of the most prestigious lots in town, from 1832 to 1873, it served patrons from far wide as the St. George Hotel. Just a short walk

up the hill from the wharves in the Tay Basin, it provided well-connected guests with easy access to the seats of power in the town. Neighbours included the courthouse and, originally, the Anglican, Presbyterian, and Roman Catholic churches, as well as owners of the majestic Summit House. In 1836, William Cross advertised in the Bathurst Courier that, “His table is at all times supplied with the best the District can afford, and the Bar stored with Wines and Liquors of the first quality.”


This neoclassical sandstone building with a deep hip roof as also home to the local Jewish community’s synagogue (1953–70). Since then, it has been apartments, with major renovations and exterior restoration work done in the late 1980s. (from Lanark County Tourism website)
