Inscription. This bell was purchased for and hung in the original Oconee Street Methodist Episcopal Church, South, located at 142 Oconee Street. It is the first known item to represent the church in the Athens community, arriving in August 1870, before the church was completed. On August 26, 1870, the Southern Banner reported that church members "hope the residents of the Eastern part of town will respond when its tones invite them to this pleasant place of worship."

The bell was moved to this site when the church was relocated in 1903. The bell was cracked in the fire that destroyed the church in 2013, rendering it unusable. As the oldest tangible item from the original building, it continues to hold an important place in the life of the church.
