Arend Bontekoe
Naarden 13 oktober 1895 - Sachsenhausen, 13 januari 1945
Arend Bontekoe, a former infantry captain in the Dutch East Indies Army, went directly into the resistance at the outbreak of the Second World War. From Amsterdam-West he helped allied pilots, he took care of the distribution of ration cards for people in hiding, collected money for the resistance, and was involved in the dissemination of the illegal magazine Vrij Nederland and in weapons drops. Bontekoe was a member of the Legion of Former Front fighters (LOF), a shadow army that was founded in 1941 and merged into the illegal Order Service (OD). This service focused on the post-occupation period, on the assumption that Germany was within a year of giving up. In 1944, Bontekoe was on the verge of going into hiding, but he was arrested. He died in the Sachsenhausen concentration camp because of the many hardships. After the war, Queen Juliana presented his daughter the Resistance Cross 1940-1945 for his many brave deeds.
