1. Settlers Discover the Spring Marker
Inscription.
1783 North Carolina Legislature creates Davidson County, which includes parts of present-day Rutherford County.

1786 North Carolina Legislature makes initial land grants in Stones River area.

1788 Last elk in county is killed at Murfree Spring.

1792 Scouting parties come to Black Fox Camp and Spring.

1794 Orr military expedition passes through county, camped at Black Fox Camp.

1795 Permanent settlers move into Rutherford County; corn, cotton, and livestock become important agricultural products.

1799 William Lytle acquires land on the west fork of the Stones River. Cave Mill, one of the first, if the not the first, grist mills, opens.

1803 Tennessee General Assembly authorizes creation of Rutherford County.

1804 First county court meets at residence of Thomas Rucker, which is now the location of the Veterans Administration Hospital. It selects Jefferson, at the forks of the Stones River, as the first county seat.

1808 William Lytle and James Rucker operate cotton gins.
