1. A Town Emerges on the Water's Edge Marker
Inscription.
1811 Cap. William Lytle donates 60 acres to establish the town of Murfreesboro. It is named after Colonel Hardy Murfree. Murfreesboro is created as new county seat. First house is erected. Bradley Academy is opened as the first all boy's school.

1815 Slave Market building is constructed.

1818-1826 Murfreesboro is selected and operates as State Capital.

1822 Courthouse burns. Steamboat travel on the Cumberland River and smaller boats on Stones River create commerce.

1826 Local militia company, the Murfreesboro Sentinels, holds a Fourth of July celebration at Murfree Spring.

1827 Local Temperance Society is established.

1831 Nashville-Murfreesboro-Shelbyville turnpike is chartered. Washington Cotton Factory opens.

1832 Cholera epidemic hits the town, and another in 1835.

1822-1834 Rose Water Works is chartered and starts operations. Its superintendent, according to John Spence's history, was Peter Jennings, an African-American Revolutionary War veteran and free black.

1836 Murfreesboro-Manchester turnpike is chartered. The general route was of that of US 41, which passes in front of Discovery Center.

1838 The Trail of Tears passes down Murfreesboro/Woodbury
