1. Gold Star Families Memorial Monument Marker
Inscription. This monument honors, recognizes and serves Gold Star Families and the legacy of their Loved Ones who have paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving in the armed forces of the United States of America.

The Homeland panel depicts images representing the state of South Dakota which is home to many Gold Star Families—our people, our family, our freedom. The USS South Dakota is a title bestowed on four naval vessels since statehood. The Battleship South Dakota, once nicknamed Battleship X, was the most decorated WWII battleship. Serving from 1942 - 1947 she earned 13 battle stars prior to decommissioning. The South Dakota battleship memorial is on display in Sioux Falls.

The Family panel represents the uniquely brave spirit of our military families who provide support to their Loved Ones serving in the armed forces of the United States of America. Families in South Dakota have contributed to over a century of service and sacrifice to our armed forces. Our National Guard families do not enlist but they make sacrifices and endure the extra responsibilities on the home front.

The Patriot panel shows the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima, which symbolizes those who vigorously support and defend our great Nation through selfless service in our armed forces.

For the Fallen
"They shall grow not old,
as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them,
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the
sun and in the morning
We will remember them."
