1. Higbee Street School Marker
Inscription. A free public school system was organized here in 1832, with separate schools for males, females; and African-Americans. A generation later, this was the first school built for African-American students. Of the 700 African-Americans in Trenton’s 1857 population of 18,000, 63 were of school age.
 
Erected 2004 by City of Trenton, New Jersey.
