Dramaturgo, poeta y ensayista, padre de Leandro Fernández de Moratin, encarna los ideales literarios de la época siendo uno de los más eficaces reformadores del gusto poético. Perteneció a importantes círculos culturales de su tiempo, como la tertulia de la Fonda de San Sebastiáno la Sociedad de Amigos del Pais. Estudió filosofia en los jesuitas de Calatayud y leyes en la Universidad de Valladolid. Graduado en Derecho, se dedicó por un tiempo al ejercicio de la abogacía. Fue profesor de Poética en el Colegio Imperial de Madrid. De su obra teatral destacan las tragedias Lucrecia, Hormesinda y Guzmán el Bueno y la comedia La Petimetra. Entre sus composiciones poéticas figuran sus anacreónticas, sátiras, sonetos, silvas, romances, odas - A Pedro Pomero - y quintillas - Fiesta de Toros en Madrid.
Playwright, poet and essayist, and father of Leandro Fernández de Moratin, he embodies the literary ideals of the time, being one of the most effective reformers of poetic taste. He belonged to the important cultural circles of his time, such as the Fonda de San Sebastián and the Sociedad de Amigos del Pais. He studied philosophy with the Jesuits of Calatayud and law at the University of Valladolid. Having graduated in Law, he devoted himself for a time to its practice. He was professor of Poetics at the Colegio Imperial in Madrid. Of his theatrical work, the tragedies Lucrecia, Hormesinda and Guzmán el Bueno and the comedy La Petimetra stand out. Among his poetic compositions are his anacreons, satires, sonnets, silvas, romances, odes - To Pedro Pomero - and limericks - Fiesta de Toros in Madrid ("Bullfighting Festival in Madrid").
