1. Marion College Marker
Inscription. Founded in 1873 as the Marion Female College by the Rev. J.J. Scherer. It was chartered by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a liberal arts college the following year and renamed Marion Junior College in 1912. The first missionary society of the southern Lutheran church was organized on this campus. At the close of the college, all records were transferred to Roanoke College, a sister institution (o)f the Lutheran church. An alumnae chapter is still active.
