More about this marker. The County of Los Angeles began designating Historic Landmarks in 2016. After retroactively assigning marker No. 1 to the Hollywood Bowl, this house was the first landmark nomination. The plaque was installed before the County had an official plaque design.
Regarding Doumakes House. The Doumakes House was built for James Doumakes (1879- 1956), a Greek immigrant who arrived in the United States in 1900. He acquired the property in 1927, and the family occupied the residence from 1928 until 1958.
James Doumakes was the founder of the Doumak Company, which grew to be one of the foremost manufacturers of marshmallows in the United States. The company was founded in Los Angeles in 1921 and has held at least two patents associated with the mass production of marshmallows. Today, the Doumak Company produces the Campfire brand and other private label marshmallows.
The Doumakes House was built in 1928 in the Spanish Colonial Revival style. The two-story house comprises 3,117 square ft. on two levels, including four bedrooms and three bathrooms.
