Kirkpatrick Chapel. . Built in 1873 in the High Victorian Gothic Revival style, this chapel was designed by New Brunswick native, Henry J. Hardenbergh, the great-great-grandson of Rutgers' first president, Rev. Jacob Hardenbergh. Its vibrant glass windows are some of the first opalescent and multicolored stained glass manufactured in America. The chapel was named in honor of Sophia Astley Kirkpatrick, wife of New Brunswick Mayor and Rutgers Trustee, Littleton Kirkpatrick. A humanitarian and philanthropist, she bequeathed her estate to Rutgers College. In addition to daily chapel services, the chapel housed the Rutgers College Library until 1903.
