1. 'Jefferson Street' Joe Gilliam Marker
Inscription. Joe Gilliam, Tennessee State University alumnus, was named National Black College Player of the Year in 1971 and 1972. His college career record included 39 wins and only three losses. He also led the Tigers to two Division II national championships. Gilliam went on to play in the NFL and while playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers, became one of the first African American quarterbacks to start a regular season game in NFL history.
