Inscription. Howard Gentry, Sr. served Tennessee State University for over twenty-one years as a football coach and athletic director. He was instrumental in guiding Tennessee State University coaching legends John Merritt, Ed Martin, and Ed Temple during his leadership of the Tigers' athletic program. As athletic director Gentry's stewardship saw the Tigers football team appear in five NCAA Bowl games and capture five Black College Championships.
