This Grier/Campbell residence is an unusual hybrid of English and Dutch house framing practices. This building may be the oldest existing home in Stafford Township. In 1871, the Stafford Land Company purchased this building as an office and residence for General William Grier, the company president. General Grier was a Civil War Federal Cavalry Officer wounded at the battle of Williamsburg. He was also an Indian Wars veteran. With his son-in-law, William Campbell, General Grier developed Stafford Avenue as the main street in Manahawkin. They hoped that Stafford Avenue would become the thoroughfare to Long Beach Island. On this site in July of 1872, the Stafford Land Company held an auction of several hundred acres between Beach Avenue and Bay Avenue east of Division Street. A special chartered train brought more than 1000 potential bidders to participate in the auction.

In June 2003, Stafford Township purchased the Cavalry Cottage as the first parcel acquired by the Stafford Township Open Space Fund. Cavalry Cottage is certified as eligible for inclusion in the New Jersey and National Registers of Historic Places. Together, Stafford Township and the STHS plan to develop this site into the Brescia Historical Research Center.
