Characteristics: These small New World Monkeys are identified by their distinctive white mustache which was thought to resemble that of Emperor Wilhelm III of Germany. These small primates weigh about one pound and have speckled brown hair and a long orange tail. they are completely arboreal, meaning that they spend their entire life in the trees. They use their specialized claws to help them grip branches, trees and vines as they move around the canopy. They will form mixed troops and are often found traveling with other species of tamarins in their home range.

Habitat: The tree tops of tropical lowland forests across the Amazon in Brazil and Peru.

Diet: Insects, fruit, nectar, frogs, lizards and bird eggs.

Conservation: Classified as Least Concern, however habitat loss is a growing threat.

Range: Southwestern Brazil, Western Peru and Northwestern Bolivia.

Life Span: 10-13 years in the wild, up to 20 years in captivity.
Size: 9 inches in height and up to 1 lb.
Reproduction: Emperor Tamarins have a polyandrous mating system, which means that a dominant female will mate with several males of her

choosing. After about a 6 month gestation they give birth to their offspring. Twins are typical and they are usually cared for by several family members.
