Pieter Jelles Troelstra (1860-1930)

Hij was een Nederlands advocaat, journalist en politicus. Hij was grote voorman van de sociaaldemocraten aan het einde van de negentiende en begin van de twintigste eeuw. Samen met elf anderen richtte hij in 1894 de SDAP op. Hij kwam in 1897 in de Tweede Kamer en werd, ondanks dat niet iedereen het met zijn denkbeelden eens was, al snel erkend als goed politiek debater. Hij was een goed spreker, zowel in het parlement als bij massabijeenkomsten. Soms kregen zijn emoties de overhand, waardoor hij onbezonnen reageerde. Ondanks dit bleef hij zeer populair bij zijn achterban.

Daarnaast heeft hij in Friesland grote bekendheid gekregen als Fries schrijver en dichter.

He was a Dutch lawyer, journalist and politician. He was a great leader of the Social Democrats at the end of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Together with eleven others, he founded the SDAP in 1894. He entered the House of Representatives in 1897 and, despite the fact that not everyone agreed with his views, was soon recognized

Excerpt: Pieter Jelles Troelstra (20 April 1860 – 12 May 1930) was a Dutch lawyer, journalist and politician active in the socialist workers' movement. He is most remembered for his fight for universal suffrage and his failed call for revolution at the end of World War I. From 1888 to 1904, Troelstra was married to Sjoukje Bokma de Boer, a well-known children's book writer, under the pen name of Nienke van Hichtum.
