Joseph Mendes da Costa (1863-1939)

Hij was een Nederlandse beeldhouwer en werd vooral bekend door het maken van beelden en ornamenten voor gebouwen. Hij was van 1886 tot 1887 lid van de kunstenaarsgroep "Labor et Ars", die later de vertegenwoordigers zouden worden van de Nederlandse variant van de Art Nouveau. Hij stond. aan de basis van de 20e-eeuwse kunst in Nederland. Als eerste beeldhouwer ontwikkelde hij een monumentale, symbolische stijl van strakke lijnen en heldere vlakken.

Joseph Mendes da Costa was a Dutch sculptor and was best known for making statues and ornaments for buildings. From 1886 to 1887 he was a member of the artists' group "Labor et Ars", which would later become the representatives of the Dutch variant of Art Nouveau. He was a part of the foundation of 20th-century art in the Netherlands, as the first sculptor to develop a monumental, symbolic style of clean lines and clear surfaces.
