Arnoldus Polak Kerdijk (1846-1905)

Arnold Kerdijk was een Nederlandse journalist en politicus. Hij studeerde van 1863 tot 1871 rechten in Utrecht. In promoveerde hij het Romeins en hedendaags recht. Hij ging werken als hoofdopziener voor het lager onderwijs in Zuid-Holland. In 1880 werd hij de eerste directeur bij de Rijkspostspaarbank in oprichting. Hij was ervan overtuigd dat het leren sparen kon bijdragen aan de emancipatie van arbeiders. In 1887 werd hij lid van de Tweede Kammer der Staten-General en bleef kamerlid tot 1901 namens Amsterdam.

(English translation:)

Arnold Kerdijk was a Dutch journalist and politician. He studied law in Utrecht from 1863 to 1871, obtaining his doctorate in Roman and contemporary law. He went to work as a chief overseer for primary education in South Holland. In 1880 he became the first director of the Rijkspostspaarbank (postal savings bank) upon its foundation. He was convinced that learning to save could contribute to the emancipation of workers. In 1887 he became a member of the Legislature and remained a member of parliament, representing
