Marianne Rogers Redman Hudson - granddaughter of Edgar O. Selby - was the manager of the Selby Building and the Selby Estates Corporation when J.J. Newberry closed. Newberry was the building's oldest and longest tenant. It had been there 72 years and felt like a hometown business to lots of people.

According to one woman, "When we moved [from Coshocton] to Houston I was shocked to see a J.J. Newberry at the Gulf Coast Mall."

According to Dianne Peffer, Marianne Redman ran everywhere rather than walk. "She was a quick pretty little thing. Her little feet went so fast!"

In 1961, at the height of its success, J. J. Newberry Co. operated 565 stores.

J. J. Newberry to close
By Rosa Davis Tribune Staff Writer
After almost three-quarters of a century doing business at 441 Main St., J.J. Newberry's will close its doors in January, its parent company confirmed Wednesday.

J. J. Newberry Co. began in Coshocton in 1921 was bought by the McCory Store of Pennsylvania in January 1973.

A continuing effort by McCory to restructure under Chapter 11 bankruptcy has been difficult and made it necessary to close the local store and two others in Ohio, company officials said Wednesday.

There may have been other reasons for the closing too, according to both store manager Brad Minard and the owner of the building.

Mary Ann Redman - who over-sees Selby Estate which owns the building - said they and McCory personnel have been negotiating to an agreement on who was to purchase
