Coshocton in Coshocton County, Ohio — The American Midwest (Great Lakes)
Little Social Histories
Little Social Histories is a collection of stories about 441 Main Street over time. The project spas 34 windows and two buildings.
The larger building could be identified as the Selby Building by its stone nameplate above the center 3rd story windows if it wasn't covered by a painted piece of wood. When it was built by Edgar O. Selby in 1895, the building was the largest structure used for mercantile purposes in Coshocton.
Standing on the street, it's hard to tell much about the second, smaller building - the original windows have been downsized and replaced. Fake brick siding covers the old face.
The two buildings were tied together in the mid 1950's, when the Selby Building's largest and longest tenant (1921-1993) J. J. Newberry Co. expanded from a five and dime store to a variety department store. At this time the storefront was modernized with oatmeal-texture porcelain enamel tiles - a popular facade material starting in the late 1940's that was used on many commercial chain stores.
This elided building has 43,500 square feet + of retail and storage space combined.
